Test methods for powder characterization and quality assurance
In powder-based manufacturing processes, the properties of the powder significantly influence the final properties of the component. The particle size and particle shape, as well as the flowability of the bulk material, are the decisive factors. Determining the right powder is therefore crucial for successful production. We offer a wide range of methods for characterizing powder properties, some of which are certified to DIN EN ISO 9001. Thanks to our many years of experience, we can interpret the results accurately and identify optimization potential. We know what is important and are your contact for all metrological questions concerning powder analysis.
From Karl Fischer titration to particle size distribution analysis and powder density determination - we offer the right test method for every problem
The areas of application and requirements for products - and thus also for their starting materials - are becoming ever greater. Powder analysis provides meaningful information on the suitability and processing properties of materials in specific applications. Whether powder production, mechanical engineering, the pharmaceutical industry or the automotive industry - we work for customers from a wide range of sectors, both from industry and production as well as from research and development.
With the help of our extensive particle and powder measurement technology, we investigate, among other things, the
- Particle size distribution
- Surface properties
- Morphology
- Agglomerate formation
- Powder moisture
- Compaction properties
- Density and porosity and
- Flowability
of a wide variety of powder materials.
The following test methods and equipment are available for characterization:
- Bulk density and tap density
- Revolution Powder Analyzer
- Rotary Sample Divider
- Hall Flow Meter
- Specific surface BET

- Karl Fischer Titration
- Static and dynamic particle analysis
Dr. Andrea Berg heads the "Metallography and Analytics" group at Fraunhofer IFAM. For many years, the group has been performing material and component analyses along the entire process chain. In addition to damage and thermal analyses, powder analysis is a main focus. The properties of the powders used in the manufacturing processes determine their processability and thus directly the end products. In close cooperation with the customer, investigations are specifically selected to analyze existing questions and problems and to optimize the processes and thus the end products.
