Project Presentation: Construction of a Demonstrator to Utilize the Thermophysical Properties of PCM for Pressure Generation
In the low temperature range below 100 °C, the sensible use of waste heat is often limited by the low temperature level. At the same time, large amounts of waste heat are generated at this temperature level. On the other hand, large amounts of electrical energy are used to generate compressed air. By using the low-temperature waste heat for compressed air generation, the primary energy requirement is to be reduced and the environmental impact and climate emissions associated with energy supply are to be reduced by increasing energy efficiency. Based on the results of internal preliminary research, an existing plant concept for the generation of compressed air from low-temperature waste heat (thermal compressor) is to be set up and validated under laboratory conditions. The volume change of phase change materials (PCM) is specifically exploited for pressure generation. A modular design and efficient use of energy should enable this technology to be used economically. Based on the results of the technology development and the construction and use of a demonstrator under laboratory conditions, proof of function is to be provided and conclusions drawn for economic use under industrial conditions. These findings are the basis for the further transfer of the technology in industry and also for the compression of other gases (e.g. hydrogen).
