Customised Plasma Nozzles

Efficient Plasma Coating with Customized Nozzles

Inline coating with atmospheric pressure plasmas has established itself as a sustainable solution in industrial manufacturing. This technology offers, for example, environmentally friendly corrosion protection and enables secure adhesion of adhesives and paints – all without the use of harmful primers. Each industrial application scenario presents individual challenges: from coating width and accessibility of complex, three-dimensional components to the treatment of temperature-sensitive materials. At Fraunhofer IFAM, customized nozzle heads are developed to flexibly address these varying requirements.

Tailored Nozzles for Specific Requirements

When coating components, customer-specific requirements play a crucial role. The component geometry defines both the surfaces to be coated and the necessary cycle rates. Here, individual adaptation of coating nozzles for industrial applications may be required. For example, electronic assemblies benefit from potential-free solutions, while natural-based materials can be protected through gentle treatment processes. Fraunhofer IFAM offers precise, customized solutions. Thanks to decades of experience, the team can develop nozzle heads perfectly tailored to customer requirements, including:

  • Special nozzles for wide-area layer deposition.
  • Nozzle heads for treating fibers, particles, or wires, which can be provided with temporary corrosion protection, for example.
  • Nozzle heads for sensitive electronic components that allow potential-free application.
  • Special nozzles adapted to the precursors and application geometries.

Diversity in Coating Chemistry

The available coatings are diverse. In addition to hydrophilic adhesion-promoting layers, the modified nozzles can also apply ultra-hydrophobic release layers or high-quality aging/corrosion protection layers. The materials used range from organic and inorganic to metal-organic precursor compounds, enabling a wide range of applications.
